    • The 1900 census lists his Swedish-born parents, Frank Nelson, 51, born Sep 1848, and Mary A. Nelson, 46, born Jan 1854. Frank emigrated to the U.S. in 1868; Mary in 1866. Frank was employed as a tailor, and owned the family home, on Crawford St, free of a mortgage. Living with them were their Iowa-born children: Mabel A, b. Mar 1877; Al L, b. Jan 1879; "Chas E," 19, b. Jan 1881; Fred W, 12, b. Aug 1887; Martin, 9, b. in [Aug??] 1890; and Effie M, 4, b. Jul 1895. Charles was employed as a shoe salesman. 1900 U.S. Census, Boone City, Des Moines Twsp, Boone Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 418, stamped p. 110B).

      In 1910 the census shows Charles E Nelson, 29, and his wife of 5 years, Stella, 28, living with their son Francis E, 4, and widowed mother-in-law Sarah Hoffman, 61. Charles was the proprietor of a retail shoe store. 1910 U.S. Census, Boone City, Des Moines Twsp, Boone Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 392, stamped p. 99). The shoe store was "Slades" in Boone.

      The 1920 census records Charles, 38, living with his wife Stella, 38, son Francis E, 13, and widowed mother-in-law Sara A [sic] Hoffman, 71. Charles was working as a "merchant" in a "retail shoe store." 1920 U.S. Census, Boone, Boone Cnty, IA (T 625, Roll 479, stamped p. 92).

      By 1930 the family was reduced to Charles and Stella. Francis was no longer in the family home, having moved to New York City; Stella's mother lived elsewhere in Boone County. Charles is listed as 49; Stella as 48. Charles was employed as a "manager" of a shoe store. 1930 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 626, Roll 665, stamped p. 100). Charles was the manager of the shoe department in Armstrong's Dep't Store, Cedar Rapids.

      The Social Security Death Index provides that Charles Nelson (SSN 479-07-4007; issued by Iowa) was born 26 Jan 1881 and died in Oct 1970, while residing in Rahway, Union Cnty, NJ. However he was physically in Cedar Rapids, IA, when he died, according to grand-daughter Barbara Nelson Pavan.
