  • Notes
    • PAROCHIAL REGISTERS, CO. OF AYR, RICCARTON, provide:
"Campbell. Martha, daughter of William Campbell and Mary Fulton was born 25th Oct 1836 and baptized on the 30th by Mr. Moody." [LDS Film 1041404, frame 365]

Martha lived unmarried with her family for many years. The Census reports for Ayrshire, Riccarton Parish, for 1841, 1851, and 1861, list her as living with her parents, and then with her father after her mother died. [See William Campbell (1800-1875) Notes, and LDS Films 1042738, 1042409, 0103806.]

By 1871 she had moved on. The 1871 Census for Ayrshire, Riccarton Parish, Enumeration District #3, p. 1 (by James Gray) [LDS Film 0103965] shows Martha Campbell living as an unmarried servant with an occupation of "Dairymaid," living in the household of Robert Smith at "Whatriggs." The census records that she was born in Riccarton parish.

Robert Smith of Whatriggs is listed as the "Informant" for his father-in-law's (William Campbell's) death registration in 1875. See REGISTER OF DEATHS, 1875, Riccarton District, No. 611, AYR, p. 10, No. 30 (Murray & Gibb, Edinburgh) [LDS Film 412917]. And see William Campbell's Notes. Thus, Martha seems to have moved in with her sister and brother-in-law Robert Smith.

"Whatriggs" was a small town just SE of Riccarton. See map in vol. 2, F.H.Groome, ORDNANCE GAZETTEER OF SCOTLAND, p. 937 (1903).
