  • Notes
    • The PAROCHIAL REGISTER, CO. OF AYR, RICCARTON, 611/2,states:
"Campbell. James, son of William Campbell and Mary Fulton was born 30th Oct. 1842 & baptized 6th Novr." [sic] [LDS Film 1041404; frame 385].

The 1851 Ayrshire census shows James and "Mathew" [sic] living in the family home in Riccarton Parish; the 1861 census shows that they both were absent from the family home. See Census of Great Britain, 1851, Riccarton Parish, Ayr, Scotland, Enumeration Book #3 (LDS Film 1042409); and 1861 Census, Riccarton Parish, Ayr (#611), Enumeration Division #3 (by John Millar) [LDS Film 0103806].

It appears that James and his wife Janette departed Scotland from Glasgow in 1869 and arrived in New York City on 3 May 1869 aboard the ship Columbia. The ship's manifest listed James as a 26 year old weaver, and listed "Janet" as 24 years old. They had no children with them. Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1820-1897 (National Archives Microfilm Pub. M 237, Roll 309, List # 431, lines 31 & 32; Records of the U.S. Customs Service, Record Group 36; The National Archives, Washington, D.C.) [www.Ancestry.com data accessed July 2007].

James and his older brother obviously had been in contact prior to his immigration because James went rather directly to Illinois after his arrival in the United States. The 1870 Illinois census lists James living with Matthew in Kendall County. It provides: "Campbell, James, 25 [sic], M[ale], W[hite], Farmer, Scotland." Right below him is listed "Matthew, 28, M, W, Farmer, Scotland." 1870 U.S. Census, Kendall twsp, Kendall Cnty, IL (M 593, Roll 239, stamped p. 385). See also, Elmer G. Dickson, 1870 Census of Kendall County, IL, p. 144 (published by E.G.Dickson, Chico, CA: 1994).

Note that James is listed in the census as 3 years younger than Matthew, while Scottish church records suggest only a 2 year difference. Note also that James is listed as living with his brother; there is no mention of James' wife Janette or son James, Jr., even though the 1900 census (see below) reported that they came to America in 1868 (which is slightly inaccurate).

The 1880 census shows "Camble, James," a 38 year old farmer, born in Scotland, living with his wife Janette, 36 years old, also born in Scotland, and their children, James [Jr.],10, Margaret, 7, Mary, 6, and Emma, 1. Also living in the household was a hired farm hand. 1880 U.S. Census, Kendall Twsp, Kendall Cnty, IL (T 9, Roll 219, stamped p. 337). See also, Elmer G. Dickson, 1880 Census of Kendall County, IL, p. 139 (published by E.G.Dickson, Chico, CA: 1994).

The 1900 census lists "Campbell, James" as a 58-yr old farmer, born in Feb [sic], 1842, in Scotland, with parents born in Scotland, married for 32 years to his wife Janette, 55, born May 1845 in Scotland, as well as her parents. The census records that the couple had 6 children, 4 of whom were living. Daughter "Annie J", 21, born Dec. 1878 in Illinois, was the only child living with them at the time of the census. The census also records that the couple came to America in 1868 [sic] and that James was a naturalized citizen. 1900 U.S. Census, Naausay Twp, Kendall Cnty, IL (T 623, Roll 313, stamped p. 98).

At the time of this 1900 census James and Janette Campbell were living 5 dwellings (probably farms) away from the family of Frank and Elizabeth McMicken, whose son Robert would, in 1923, become the husband of their granddaughter Olive Ferguson.
    • A local newspaper clipping states: "The funeral services of James Campbell were held Monday and interment took place at the United Presbyterian church cemetery in Wheatland. Mr. Campbell was born in Scotland in 1842, the exact date not being known. A wife and four children survive him."
    • According to Wheatland Cemetery records, James and his wife "Janet" are buried in Lot 19, south 1/2.
