  • Notes
    • PAROCHIAL REGISTERS, CO. OF AYR, RICCARTON [Parish], vol. 611/2, provides:
"1830. Campbell & Fulton. 15 Jan : William Campbell and Mary Fulton both in this Parish, enter their names, were regularly proclaimed three times on two Sabbaths and married on the 29th by the Rev. John Moody of Riccarton." [LDS Film 1041404, frame 436]

The 1841 Census for Scotland, Riccarton Parish (No. 611), Enumerator's Schedule No. 6 (District #6) [LDS Film 1042738] records the Campbell family living in a house in "Little Commonhead." The Census shows: William Campbell, age 40 [sic], and lists his occupation as "Ag Lab" [agriculture labourer]. His wife Mary is shown as age 30. The following children are listed: Ann, age 11; Robert, age 9; James, age 8; William, age 6; Martha, age 4; John, age 3; and Matthew, age 9 months. All members of the family are recorded as being born "to the County" of Ayr.

Enumeration Book No. 3 of the Census of 1851 for Scotland, Riccarton Parish (No. 611) [LDS Film 1042409], lists census records for the following geographical area:
"All that part of the Parish of Riccarton without the Parliamentary Boundary of the Burgh of Kilmarnock, which lies between the Turnpike Road leading from Riccarton to Caivenhill [?] on the west, and from Shawhill by the Water of Cessnock as far as Braehead farm, and from that point in a direct line to the Water of Irvine on the east, including the farms of East Mosside, Raimshill and Riccarton Mill. Length three miles Breadth one mile and a half." (Ibid, p. i).

The book records (Ibid, p. 5) the Campbell family still living in Commonhead. William Campbell is listed as the "Head of Family," in a "Mar[ried]" "Condition", and age 52 [sic]. His occupation is shown as "Ag Labourer." He is recorded as born in Riccarton, Ayrshire. His wife Mary is listed as age 44, born in Kilmaurs [sic], Ayrshire. Children still in the home are daughter Martha, unmarried, age 14; son Matthew, unmarried, age 10 and a "scholar"; son James [the second], unmarried, age 8 and also a "scholar"; and son Thomas, unmarried, age 1.

The 1861 Census for Ayrshire, Riccarton Parish (#611), Enumeration Division #3 (by John Millar) [LDS Film 0103806] lists the family as still living in Commonhead, but quite diminished in size. William is shown at age 63 [sic] as head of the family, but his "condition" is listed as "Widr" [widower]. His occupation is still shown as "Ag Labourer" and he is shown as born in Ayrshire, Riccarton. The census notes that 1 room in the house had one or more windows! Still living with William are his daughter Martha, unmarried, age 23, whose occupation is listed as "housekeeper," and son Thomas, who is listed as age 10 and as a "scholar."

The 1871 Census for Ayrshire, Riccarton Parish, Enumeration District #3, p. 11 (by James Gray) [LDS Film 0103965] shows that William is now living alone. His daughter Martha has moved on to work as a servant elsewhere. William is listed as living at "Middton Cottage" as a 72 [sic] year old widower. His occupation is listed as "Retired Labourer." His cottage is noted also as having 1 room with one or more windows.

The Riccarton District death register for William provides the following:
Name: "William Campbell, General Labourer, widower of Mary Fulton"; Date/Place: "1875, March eighth, 8 am, Midton Cot-house"; Sex/Age: "M / 76"; Father: "Robert Campbell, Tenant Farmer (deceased)"; Mother: "Martha Campbell, MS [maiden surname] Parker (deceased)"; Cause: "Chronic Disease of Bladder, 5 months..."; Informant: "Robert Smith, Son-in-Law, Whatriggs"; Registered: "1875, March 8th, Riccarton." REGISTER OF DEATHS, 1875, Riccarton District, No. 611, AYR, p. 10, No. 30 (Murray & Gibb, Edinburgh) [LDS Film 412917].
    • (Research):
The 4 census reports cited above in the General Notes yield different birth years for William. The 1841 census has him at age 40; a birth year of 1801. The 1851 census has him at 52; a birth year of 1799. In 1861 it's 63; a birth year of 1798. And in 1871 he's 72; a birth year of 1799. One wonders about these disparities, but commentators say that the age listings in these census reports are not too reliable, and the 1841 census is notoriously unreliable.

The Old Parochial Registers of Ayr do not list a William Campbell born in those years in Riccarton Parish. However, during that period there was no mandatory registration.
