  • Notes
    • The 1870 census lists John Wilkinson's family: John is recorded as a 63-yr old farmer, born in England, living with his wife Hannah, 58, born in Pennsylvania, who is "keeping house," and 4 children all of whom were born in Pennsylvania: "Elen," 26, Thomas, 24, a farmer, Carpenter, 20, who had been a student during the year, and Clementine Blowers, 23. 1870 U.S. Census, Tipton P.O., Centre [sic] Twsp, Cedar Cnty, IA (M 593, Roll 380, written p. 24, stamped p. 148).

The 1880 census lists John as a 73 year old farmer, born in England, living with his wife "Anna," 67, and grandchildren Harry, Hannah and Nellie Blowers. 1880 U.S. Census, Center [sic] Twsp, Cedar Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 331, stamped p. 109).
    • Note that both the 1870 and 1880 census reports suggest that John was born in 1807 rather than in 1809, as Bertha Newens reported. The censuses are listed as a source for John's birth, primarily to corroborate that he was born in England.
    • Attached to family charts prepared in the 1960's by John's granddaughter, Bertha Newens, is the following undated obituary newspaper clipping:
"WILKINSON.--John Wilkinson ... was born in New Castle, England, in 1809, and died Nov. 11, 1896. For some time before his death he had resided with his daughter, Mrs. Jno. [Johanna] Helmer, five miles southwest of Bennett [IA]. Mr. Wilkinson was a kind neighbor and a devoted father. He united with the church of England previous to his emigration to America and remained a member until his death. He passed away expressing a bright hope for the future. The funeral was held Nov. 13 at Mr. Helmer's, conducted by Rev. C. G. Oxley, of Bennett. The grief stricken relatives have the sympathy of the entire community. The relatives desire to express their gratitude to all who came to their assistance."

There are Ancestry.com Family Trees which suggest that John's parents were Thomas Wilkinson and Mary Stoker. E.g., https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/39529290/person/20488551081/facts/

Thomas supposedly was born abt 1780 in Willington Quay, Northumberland, England. See: Anonymous, England, Select Marriages, 1538-1973, (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake City, UT, England, Marriages, 1538-1973; Online database, https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/9852/), (LDS Film 95029). Supposedly he died abt Oct 1840 at Tynemouth, Northumberland, England. See: https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?dbid=8914&h=36813259&indiv=try&o_vc=Record:OtherRecord&rhSource=984/ However, when one views the actual handwritten death index, Thomas is nowhere to be found - neither on Image 73, nor 74, where one finds five Thomas Wilkinsons, but not the pertinent one, which supposedly is recorded in vol. 25, p. 295.

Mary supposedly was born abt 1784 in Northumberland, and died abt Mar 1866 in Newcastle, Northumberland, England. See: General Register Office, England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1837-1915, (General Register Office, England and Wales Civil Registration Indexes, General Register Office, London, England; Online database, https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/8914/), (p. 312 [Image 27]).

Thomas and Mary were married 2 Oct 1802 in Wallsend, Northumberland, England. See: Anonymous, England, Select Marriages, 1538-1973, (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake City, UT, England, Marriages, 1538-1973; Online database, https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/9852/), (LDS Film 95029).
