"The Smith family is an old and respected Germany family. The American projenitor [sic] was John Schmid, which is the original spelling. He was a native of Germany. In 1730, he emigrated from his native land to America, and settled upon a large plantation in Maryland, becoming the owner of land that was situated in the southwestern part of the Monocacy Valley. He obtained grants for this land from Charles Calvert, Lord Baltimore. In 1761, his naturalization papers were granted him.... Mr. Smith served as a member of the Colonial army during the War of the Revolution. His death occurred in 1785."
