  • Notes
    • George's father Valentine's will is located in Frederick County Will Book GM #2, pp. 437-438. The will was signed 20 June 1791; it appears that it was admitted to probate 5 June 1792, with an accounting filed 20 Aug 1793. Ibid. The will is abstracted in "Frederick County Wills, Liber GM#2," vol. 8, Western Maryland Genealogy, at p. 137 (1992), and in M.B.Hageness, Abstract of Wills, Liber GM#2, 1783-1794, Frederick County, Maryland, pp. 58-59 (MLH Research, Anniston, AL (2001) [LDS Film 1440551].)

The will provides among other things that "I Valentine Rinehart of Frederick County ... give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Barbary [sic] all my estate both real and personal during her life, or as long as she lives my widow ... and at the death of my said wife I give and bequeath to my well beloved son George Rinehart ... [various tracts of land] ... and he my said son shall give unto my said wife ten bushels of wheat and ten bushels of rye every year so long as she lives my widow ... and at the death of my said wife that he my said son shall give to my four daughters whose names is [sic] as follows, vis, that is to say Elizabeth Sorrier, Catrin Shaul, Christenor Snowfer [sic], and Mary Weaver, the sum of forty pounds specie in equal parts ... until one hundred and sixty pounds is paid ... and ... the rest of my estate real and personal not heretofore mentioned be equally divided amongst my son and four daughters abovementioned ... [wife Barbary, son George, and Frederick Sorrier shall be my executors] ***."

George's will may be found in Frederick County Will Book GM#3, pp. 422-425. Among other things it suggests that George must have used the name "Valentine" on occasion.

The will bequeaths "unto my well beloved wife Magdalena all my estate both real and personal during her life or as long as she lives my widow -- but if she should marry then she shall have one hundred acres of land ... my said wife is to have the old house and garden and two milk cows and [illegible] for her use during her natural life but if she dies the said hundred acres of land is [sic] to be divided amongst my five children George Barbara Mary Elisabeth [sic] and Salome but if my said wife should not marry again she is to live with her son George in the brick house and she is to have one room and kitchen and [?] the black girl for her maid but after my wifes [sic] decease the black girl named Jine shall belong to my son George and to his heirs forever but my said son George is to give to my said wife twelve bushels of wheat and three bushels of rye yearly...." The will bequeaths various parcels of land to each of his five living children.

Richard Ott, "Ott-Main2.fdb," reports: "1798 glass tax - owned 721 acres in Piney Creek Hundred, Fred. Co., Md., large brick house and his mother's log house. Left Jini [sic], black girl to Magdalena for maid, 257 acres of Phillipsburgh and Chestnut ridge and part of Owing tract containing 100 acres to son George. Gave Barbara 111 acres bought from Sam. Chadd and 139 acres bought from Bruce. Mary & Eliz. got old place on Pipe Creek and place bought from Sam. Stump divided between them. Salome got 200 acres bought from John Shaul. 1790 Fred. Co. Census 1M>16, 2M<16, 5F."
    • George's tombstone, in German, spells his name as "Georg Reinhard."
