New York, also a plasterer; James A, 21 [1849], a [house?] painter, also b. New York [sic]; Lester C, 14 [1856], b. By 1880 the family group had diminished and relocated to Chicago. That census shows Joseph, 56, a "Mason," living with his wife Elizabeth, 53, who "Keeps house," [apparently running a boarding house on 26th Street] and two sons: Lester, 24, also a "Mason," and "Willie," 19, a "Calciminer." Also in the house were 17 boarders. 1880 U.S. Census, Chicago, Cook Cnty, IL (T 9, Roll 186, stamped p. 59).
