    • The 1880 census lists his father Garrett, a 37 year old farmer, born in Holland, living with his wife Mathilda, 34, also born in Holland, and their 5 children, all born in Michigan: Ann F, 12; Gestie, 10, Seine, 8; Francis [sic], 5; and Herbert, 3. 1880 U.S. Census, Holland Twsp, Orange City, Sioux Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 364, stamped p. 180).

      "The News of Marion and Vicinity," The Cedar Rapids [IA] Daily Republican, p. 8 (8 Aug 1913):
      "Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bolks, who until recently lived in Marion, will regret to learn of the death of their infant son on Tuesday, August 6, at Sioux City, Iowa. It was born on Sunday, August 3, and apeared to be getting along quite well, but took suddenly sick and died. Mr. Bolks was deputy county auditor here for six years and Mrs. Bolks, as Miss Baker, was supervisor of drawing in the Marion and Maquoketa schools before her marriage. Mr. Bolks has a good position at present in one of the lending banks in Sioux City."

      According to his WW I draft registration, "Herbert Bottenberg Bolks" was employed as a bank teller at the Security National Bank in Sioux City and he and his wife Maude E. lived at 3112 Jones St. in Sioux City. He stated that he was born 12 Sept 1877 and was 41 years old; he was 5' 10" tall, had blue eyes and grey hair.

      The 1920 census shows Herbert B. Bolks, a 41 year old man born in Michigan, working as an assistant cashier in a bank, living with his wife Maude E, 35, and their son Herbert P, 3. 1920 U.S. Census, Prct 9, Sioux City, Woodbury Cnty, IA (T 625, Roll 520, stamped p. 250B)[the surname is mistakenly indexed as "Bolka"].

      The 1930 census records Herbert as a 52 year old bank cashier, born in Michigan of parents who had been born in Holland, living with his wife Maude E, 45, and sons Herbert P, 13, and Gordon E, 10. 1930 U.S. Census, Hull, Sioux Cnty, IA (T 626, Roll 683, stamped p. 64)[the surname is mistakenly indexed as "Bolko"].

      Janet Olson Swart, The Family History of Samuel Baker, son of Gunsmith Caleb Baker Sr., p. 479 (published to CD by Janet Olson Swart, 214 First Ave, Two Harbors, MN 55616: 2010), provides:
      "MAUDE ESTHER BAKER ... married HERBERT BOTTENBERG BOLKS 14 June 1911 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa, son of GERRIT BOLKS and MAGTELDA BOTTENBERG. He was born 12 September 1877 in Michigan, and died 01 March 1962 in Hull, Sioux County, Iowa.
      "Children of MAUDE BAKER and HERBERT BOLKS are:
      i. KENNETH ARTHUR BOLKS, b. 03 August 1913, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa; d. 05[sic] August 1913, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa.
      ii. HERBERT PAUL BOLKS, b. 22 September 1916, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. d-2009.
      iii. GORDON EARL BOLKS, b. 21 January 1920, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. d-2008."

      “Mr. Herbert B. Bolks Laid to Rest Saturday
      “Funeral services for Mr. Herbert B. Bolks were held at Hull on Saturday, March 3, at the American Reformed church with Rev. H. C. Ringenoldus officiating. Mr. and Mrs. D. James Hymans sang "The Silent Voice", accompanied by Mrs. Willis Meylink. Pall bearers were Harold Bolks, Lucas J. De Koster, Wm. Kuipers, E. C. Reimann, Charles G. Sawyer and Gerrit Van Pykeren. Burial was in Hope cemetery.
      “Herbert Bottenberg Bolks was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Bolks of Zeeland, Michigan, on September 12, 1877. His family moved to Orange City in 1878 and it was there that he grew to manhood.
      “He was educated in the public schools at Orange City and was graduated Summa Cum Laude from Iowa State College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1899.
      “After teaching in the rural schools of Sioux County for a number of years he accepted a position as Deputy Auditor in Linn County, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he met and later married Maude E. Baker on June 14,1911. To this union were born two sons, Paul and Gordon.
      “Following several years of employment in the Security National Bank in Sioux City he accepted a position in the Iowa State Bank at Hull. The remaining 42 years he was a resident of Hull, although for approximately 20 years he served as Deputy Treasurer of Sioux County. For a short time he served as Town Clerk in Hull but he was forced to retire because of the illness of his wife who preceded him in death in May, 1957.
      “Because of Mr. Bolks' deep interest in youth and education, an interest which he retained until his death, he faithfully served on the Hull Public School Board for 20 years. His many friends and those with whom he came in contact will remember him as a kindly person and a gentleman of high ideals and moral standards. Memorial gifts are being presented to the Hull Public Library, a project in which he was very interested.
      “Mr. Bolks passed away at the St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, on March 1st. Death was attributed to complications of advanced age following successful brain surgery which was performed ten days prior to his death.
      “He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude; two sisters, Mrs. Albert De Bey and Mrs. Abel Thompson; one brother, Seine. Survivors include: two sons, Dr. H. P. of Hull and Gordon E. of Sioux City and five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Claus Ehlers, Woodstock, Illinois, and Mrs. C. W. Donaldson, North Manchester, Indiana; and one brother, Dr. H. G. Bolks of Sioux City.
      “Out of town relatives attending the funeral of H. B. Bolks included Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Bolks, Dr. and Mrs, H. G. Bolks, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Roman and Clair, and Mrs Charles Kirby from Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Feldhaus from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Mrs. J. F. Feldhaus from Garretson, South Dakota.
