- The 1900 census lists James M Baker, 45, born Nov. 1854 in Iowa, living with his wife Josephine, 39, born in August 1860 [sic] in Maryland, and their daughter Maude E, 15, born in July 1884 in Iowa. They lived 5 houses away from Josephine's parents, William I. and Julia A. Snouffer. 1900 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 444, stamped p. 91).
"The News of Marion and Vicinity," The Cedar Rapids [IA] Daily Republican, p. 8 (8 Aug 1913):
"Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bolks, who until recently lived in Marion, will regret to learn of the death of their infant son on Tuesday, August 6, at Sioux City, Iowa. It was born on Sunday, August 3, and apeared to be getting along quite well, but took suddenly sick and died. Mr. Bolks was deputy county auditor here for six years and Mrs. Bolks, as Miss Baker, was supervisor of drawing in the Marion and Maquoketa schools before her marriage. Mr. Bolks has a good position at present in one of the lending banks in Sioux City."
The 1920 census lists Maude, 35, born in Iowa, living with her husband Herbert B. Bolks, a 41 year old man born in Michigan, an assistant cashier in a bank, and their son Herbert P, 3. 1920 U.S. Census, Prct 9, Sioux City, Woodbury Cnty, IA (T 625, Roll 520, stamped p. 250B)[the surname is mistakenly indexed as "Bolka"].
The 1930 census shows Maude E, 45, born in Iowa, living with her husband Herbert, a 52 year old bank cashier, and sons Herbert P, 13, and Gordon E, 10. 1930 U.S. Census, Hull, Sioux Cnty, IA (T 626, Roll 683, stamped p. 64)[the surname is mistakenly indexed as "Bolko"]
Her father's obituary, in the Cedar Rapids [IA] Gazette (23 Feb 1931), states:
"James Milton Baker, 76, 843 Third avenue southeast, who was hurt in an automobile accident Dec. 7 [1930] at which time his wife was killed, died at a local hospital ... yesterday [22 Feb 1931]. ***
"Mr. Baker was born in College township south of Cedar Rapids, Nov 16, 1854 and has been a resident of Linn county all his life. On Feb 24, 1881, he was married to Josephine Snouffer, who preceded him in death Oct. 16, 1904. To this union were born two children, Edna Julian who died in infancy and Maude Baker, now Mrs. Herbert B. Bolks, of Hull[,] who survives him. He also leaves two grandchildren, Paul and Gordon Bolks.*** "
Janet Olson Swart, The Family History of Samuel Baker, son of Gunsmith Caleb Baker Sr., p. 475 (published to CD by Janet Olson Swart, 214 First Ave, Two Harbors, MN 55616: 2010), provides:
"[Her father] JAMES MILTON BAKER ... married (1) JOSEPHINE SNOUFFER 24 February 1881 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. She was born 13 August 1859 in Reisterstown, Maryland, and died 16 October 1904 in Rapids Twp, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa....
"Children of JAMES BAKER and JOSEPHINE SNOUFFER are:
i. MAUDE ESTHER BAKER, b. 31 July 1884, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa; d. 08 May 1957, Hull, Sioux County, Iowa.
ii. EDNA JULIAN BAKER, b. 18 February 1886, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa; d. 02 August 1886, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa."
Janet O. Swart, Ibid, p. 479, states:
"MAUDE ESTHER BAKER ... was born 31 July 1884 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa, and died 08 May 1957 in Hull, Sioux County, Iowa. She married HERBERT BOTTENBERG BOLKS 14 June 1911 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa, son of
GERRIT BOLKS and MAGTELDA BOTTENBERG. He was born 12 September 1877 in Michigan, and died 01 March 1962 in Hull, Sioux County, Iowa.
"Children of MAUDE BAKER and HERBERT BOLKS are:
i. KENNETH ARTHUR BOLKS, b. 03 August 1913, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa; d. 05[sic] August 1913, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa.
ii. HERBERT PAUL BOLKS, b. 22 September 1916, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. d-2009.
iii. GORDON EARL BOLKS, b. 21 January 1920, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. d-2008."

"Because of the long illness which I have endured since last August, I would like to take this way of thanking my friends and relatives for the many cards, floral gifts and food offerings so graciously and continuously given to me during that time.
