  • Notes
    • The 1900 census (in very faint writing) lists "R M", 40, born Jan 1860 in Illinois, living with her husband of 19 years, "Snouffer, J T ", 45. John's occupation is obscured by a compiler who wrote "74G-001" over the occupation category, but the writing seems to be "Dealer D. Goods," so one may assume that John was a dry goods merchant of some sort. 1900 U.S. Census, What Cheer Prct, Washington Twsp, Keokuk Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 441, stamped p. 240B).

The 1860 birth year may have been "fudged" to make Roxena appear younger than her actual age -- her tombstone gives a birth year of 1857 and her death certificate records a birth deate of 4 Jan 1858.

    • Cedar Rapids Gazette (?) (Jun 1907):
"One of the simplest of the long list of June weddings was that of Miss Bertha Ina Newens and Mr. William D. Snouffer, which took place Wednesday evening [19 Jun 1907] at the new home of the bride and groom, at 317 South Seventh street, west....
"*** Among the out-of-town guests at the wedding were ... the groom's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Snouffer of What Cheer...."
    • The 1910 Iowa census lists Mattie R. (although the writing is nearly illegible) as a 52-yr old wife living at home with her husband of 28 years. The census reports that she had one child who was not living. It further states that she was born in Illinois and her parents in Pennsylvania. Finally the census seems to record that she had an occupation or business, but the handwriting is not legible. 1910 U.S. Census, Washington twsp, Keokuk Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 409, stamped p. 206).

The couple's child died in infancy.
    • The 1930 census lists "Roxana Snouffer" Snouffer as a 68 year old widow, born in Iowa, and living with her sister Ruby Byers, 65, a school principal, in Cedar Rapids. , Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 626, Roll 665, ED 47, p. 7A).
