  • Notes
    • The 1880 census lists "Mater" as a 6-month old girl, living with her parents and 6 siblings in Cedar Rapids. 1880 U.S.Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 351, stamped p. 79).

The 1885 Iowa State Census records the Aussieker family residing at 13 W. 1st St, First Ward, Cedar Rapids, on 1 Jan 1885. It lists Dietrich, 53, born in Germany, a "cigar maker," living with his wife Charlotte, 50, also born in Germany, and the following Illinois born children: "Charley," 25, employed with "Groceries;" Edward, 15; "Lizzie," 13; "Metta," 3; and two roomers. 1885 Iowa State Census, Ward 1, Cedar Rapids, IA (Roll 1885-221, stamped p. 33). See also: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:H8RY-BZM [the name is recorded with one "s" as Ausieker].

The 1900 census lists her mother as "Sharlot," 66, born in Mar 1834 in Germany, widowed and living with the following of her children: Charles, 40, b. Nov 1859 in Illinois, employed as a "Trav Saleman"; Edward, 30, b. Jan 1870 in Iowa, employed as a "Grocer"; Elizabeth, 28, b. Oct 1871 in Iowa, no employment listed; and Meta, 20, b. Dec 1879 in Iowa, a "Student." The family lived 8 houses away from her daughter Anna Elizabeth Snouffer. 1900 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 444, stamped p. 303A).

The 1910 census records Meta as a 30-yr old single "roomer" living in Cedar Rapids, whose occupation was as a librarian working in the public library. 1910 U.S. Census, 2nd Precinct, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 411, stamped p. 120).

By 1920 Meta had moved to Washington, D.C. According to the 1920 census, she was a single woman living and working there as a government "editorial clerk." 1920 U.S. Census, Washington, D.C. (T 625, Roll 210, ED 188, p. 6B; stamped p. 255)(her name was indexed as "Aussicker").

According to a death notice for her sister Elizabeth in Sep 1926, Meta was living in New London, Connecticut.

In September, 1929, Meta travelled to Europe. She returned to the United States through Canada, sailing on the S.S. Ausonia from Cherbourg on 7 Sep 1929 and arriving in Quebec on 14 Sep 1929. The list of arrivals confirms her birth date and place, and indicates that she was then living in New London, Connecticut. It also suggests that her traveling companion was Lena Schaefer, a woman born and living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. "Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956," www.Ancestry.com (accessed Jul 2007). Meta probably travelled from Quebec back to the U.S. and crossed the border at St. Albans, VT, in which case the original records would be found in Manifests of Passengers Arriving at St. Albans, VT, District through Canadian Pacific and Atlantic Ports, 1895-1954, The National Archives, Washington, D.C. (M 1464, RG85).
