  • Notes
    • F.R.Wollmershauser reported in 1987 that Johann Michael and Magdalena's third child was "Christina b. 3 June 1746."

The Renningen Parish Records, vol. 3 (1740-1789), p. 14a, Taufregister for 1746, provides: "Temp. Nativit. et Baptisimi - Nat. et Renat. den 3t. Juny; Infantes - Christina; Parentes - Joh. Michael Schnaufer, Weber [weaver] ux. Magdalena; Patrini - Jung Jacob Kohler Baur cum ux. Christina."

Jim Wood incorporated this into his book:
"Christina, third oldest child of Michael and Magdalena Schnauffer, was approximately 25 years old when her parents moved to Maryland [about 1771]. Born in Renningen 3 June 1746, she was five when she came to America.
"Like the other Schnauffers, her marriage record has not been found, but she already was the wife of John Dick when her mother made her will 1 March 1775. Both are mentioned." (THE SNUFFERS, p. 77)

An undated, 2-pg beginning of a longer document entitled A Biography of John Dick and His Desendentents [sic], by Abraham Lincoln Denney, probably written in the early 1900's, contains a flowery, romantic, but genealogically inaccurate introduction to the Dick family history. The 2-pg fragment was provided to Nora Jones Hickam, who in turn provided it to Jim Wood, and he has referenced it in his book THE SNUFFERS, p. 77 (1989). The fragment states, in part:
"John Dick was born in Germany and of his people there we have no record; he married ... Miss Christiana Snuffer [sic] and to this union 6 children were born; four girls and two boys. *** After losing his oldest son, George, who died of pneumonia, [John] became dissatisfied and sold his farm, and joined the wagon train that had started on the arduous trip to Kentucky. *** [They purchased land near Sinking Creek where they built a home.] It was not long until the clear land began to yield its corn and wheat and...[Christina and the] girls attended to the fields that were to be planted in flax seeds to furnish the basis for the work of weaving flax linen. The weaving of flax was an art that...[Christina] had learned in Germany and she was an expert at her loom. [Other sources confirm that the Schnauffer family was a family of weavers.] *** "

June B. Bork, WAYNE COUNTY, KENTUCKY, VITAL RECORDS, WILLS 1802-1909 and THE DICK FAMILY, pp. 173-174 (1983), writes:
"John Dick I *** married about 1775 to 1780, Christina Snuffer [sic]. ***
"John and Christina Dick had the following known children:
"George Dick *** John Dick Jr. *** Sarah Frances Dick *** Susannah Dick *** Elizabeth Dick *** Mary Dick ***."

In her pamphlet The Dick Family of Wayne County, Kentucky, p. 2 (1980), Nora Jones Hickam wrote:
"They were born in Germany.... [T]hey eventually bought land in Botetourt County, Virginia. ***
"On January 12, 1795, John and Christina Dick sold their 147 acres to George Rouk for 250 pounds....
"Their next couple years are hard to find. John Dick purchased in 1797, property in Wythe County, Virginia.... ***
"On October 12, 1802, John and Christina Dick sold their land to Charles Carter and ... they left for Kentucky then. A story has it that their son George died of pneumonia while they lived in Virginia, and when he died, they decided to move on to Kentucky. If that is true, it was probably Wythe County where he [George] died.
"When the Dick Family arrived in Kentucky, they supposedly purchased the property in Big Sinking from a squatter.... *** "

Regarding Christina's death, Ms. Hickam speculates (Ibid, p. 3): "Now, when did John and Christina Dick finally [die]? Christina must have died between 1819 and 1822 because she signed (or put her mark) on the 1819 deed, but is not mentioned in John Dick's will that he wrote on January 7, 1822 in Wayne County."
