  • Notes
    • Bertha Newens reported that Dietrich and Charlotte were both born in Germany, but were married in the United States. A preliminary search of numerous passenger arrival ship lists does not reveal any helpful information. Barbara Hannon reports that Dietrich' sister Caroline came to Iowa and lived with him for a short period before meeting and marrying William Doebel.
    • The 1860 census lists "D. Aussiker" as a 29 yr old man whose occupation was as a cigar maker, living with his wife Charlotte, 26, and their 9-mo old son Charles. 1860 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (M 653, Roll 332, stamped p. 459).

In 1870 the census shows "Diedrich Ausicker," 39, born in Hanover, Germany, a "cigar maker and dealer," living with his wife Charlotte, 36, born in Mecklenberg, Germany, who "kept house." Also with them were their children: "Chas," 10, born in Illinois, and the following Iowa-born children: "Annie," 9; Mary, 7; Augusta, 5; "Willie," 2; and Edward, 4 months, born in Feb 1870. 1870 U.S. Census, 1st Ward, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (M593, Roll 405, stamped p. 99).

THE HISTORY OF LINN COUNTY, p. 652 (Western Historical Co., Chicago: 1878) lists "Aussiker, Deitrich" as a "cigar dealer."

The 1880 census shows "D. Aussieker" as 49 years old (thus a birth year of 1831), a "cigar manufacturer" who was born in Germany, living with his wife Charlotte and 7 children in Cedar Rapids. The 7 children at home were "Annie," Charles, Augusta, "Willie," Edward, "Lissie," and "Mater." Mary A. Bailey, a 36-yr old "seamstress," also lived with them. 1880 U.S.Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 351, stamped p. 79).
    • The 1885 Iowa State Census records the Aussieker family residing at 13 W. 1st St, First Ward, Cedar Rapids, on 1 Jan 1885. It lists Dietrich, 53, born in Germany, a "cigar maker," living with his wife Charlotte, 50, also born in Germany, and the following Illinois born children: "Charley," 25, employed with "Groceries;" Edward, 15; "Lizzie," 13; "Metta," 3; and two roomers. 1885 Iowa State Census, Ward 1, Cedar Rapids, IA (Roll 1885-221, stamped p. 33). See also: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:H8RT-HN2 [the indexer spelled his name as "Deitrich Ausieker"; the handwritten census image shows "Dietrich Aussieker"].
    • Dietrich is not listed in the 1900 census. It names "Sharlot," 66, a widow, living with children Charles, Edward, Elizabeth, and Meta. 1900 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 444, stamped p. 303A).
    • Newspaper article, Evening Gazette [Cedar Rapids, IA], p. 1 (15 May 1885):
      "Supposed Suicide.
"Sudden Death of Mr. D. Aussieker
"Mr. D. Aussieker who for many years has kept a cigar store on South First Street in this city, died very suddenly this morning, and the facts as brought out by investigation would indicate that he suffered death by his own desire and at his own hand. Mr. Aussieker has been troubled for some time with indigestion, but was in his usual health last night after working all day at his trade, that of cigar maker. About twelve o'clock last night he got up out of bed and went down stairs, as he told his wife, after a drink of water, and upon his return was soon asleep. Mrs. Aussieker noticed that he snored very heavily and tried to awake him. After vain efforts in that direction she became alarmed at his heavy and labored breathing and sent for Dr. Schwartz, who arrived between two and three o'clock, and soon discovered that the man was suffering from an overdose of morphine or opium. He sent for Dr. Coggswell and the two physicians did all in their power to arouse the man from his comatose condition, but he died about six o'clock this morning. No traces can be found of where the morphine was procured, but the physicians were very positive that death was caused by an over dose of that drug. No particular motive beyond ill health can be assigned for the rash act of the deceased. Mr. Aussieker was about fifty-four years old and has lived in Cedar Rapids for twenty-five years. He leaves a wife and six children...."

In the mid-1930s the WPA's Grave Registration Project recorded that in 1885 "John D. Aussucker" had been buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, IA.
