  • Notes
    • The [Phoenix] Arizona Republic (19 May 2004):
Roy Elson died Thursday, May 11, 2004 at his home in Apache Wells. He was surrounded by his family, friends, and his loyal loving caregiver Torrence Glenn.
Roy was born January 14, 1920 in Riverside, Michigan. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1938 and in later years attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana receiving a diploma May 6, 1957 for completing a course in Foremanship Development.
His parents Bessie Snouffer Elson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and his father Claude Elson of Riverside, Michigan are deceased. His boyhood home burned when Roy was 18 and was rebuilt and eventually Roy, Jane, and their son Jim lived in that house until moving to Arizona in 1960.
Roy was inducted into the Army in June 1942, serving in the South Pacific, and later in the Air Force as a navigator. He was awarded the Bronze Star and was discharged in October, 1945.
After his WWII service he was employed at Whirlpool Corp. in St. Joseph, Michigan, as he had been prior to his military service. On June 29, 1946 Roy was married to Jane Quardokus of St. Joseph, Michigan. Their only child, James Robert was born November 3, 1948. Roy operated Elson Cabinet Co. for the next 15 years.
Roy had been stationed for a time at Williams Air Force Base in Mesa during WWII and always vowed someday he would return to Arizona. Jane was well aware of this wish when they married, so to no surprise to her, and after numerous visits to Arizona, Roy, Jane, and Jim moved to Phoenix in December 1960. They bought a 12 unit apartment building on Thomas Rd., next to Phoenix College. From the mid 1960's Roy owned and operated Sun Valley Mobile Home Sales on Main St. in Mesa where he travelled six days a week from Phoenix to Mesa. In 1972 Roy and Jane sold the apartment building and moved to Apache Wells in Mesa. He continued to operate Sun Valley Mobile Home Sales until he retired in the mid 1980's. After his retirement he totally committed himself to Apache Wells. When Apache Wells became Apache Wells Homeowners, Roy became the first President of the Board of Directors...
This tribute to Roy would not be complete without remembering his love for travel. From the time Roy and Jane were married almost to the day he passed, Roy, with Jane and Jim when Jim was at home, they travelled over 55 years, in all 50 states and many foreign countries. This was so much a part of his life we cannot forget and only remember how full his life was. To complete this remembrance, we must mention his love for both his Bayliner Cabin Cruiser, and Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer, both of which Roy enjoyed over thirty years. Someday, as he wished, some of his Spirit will be floating on Lake Mohave.
Roy is survived by his wife Jane, his son James; daughter-in-law Veronica; grandchildren, Phillip Elson, Shannon and Michelle Gardner; brother, Robert (Nancy) of Colorado; sisters, Ruth Knecht of California and Ruby (George) Wintersteen of Mesa; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. ... followed by a 1:00 p.m. Memorial Service at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.... In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Apache Wells Library Memorial Fund....
    • Obituary, The [St. Joseph, MI] Herald-Palladium (15 May 2004):
"RIVERSIDE -- Roy B. Elson, 84, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at his residence in Mesa, Ariz.
"Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at a later date in Apache Wells. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Library Fund, c/o Apache Wells Homeowners Association....
"Roy was born Jan. 14, 1920, in Riverside, Mich., to Claude and Bessie (Snouffer) Elson. His grandfather, Jacob D. Elson, came to Hagar Township in about 1850, where his father, Claude, was born in 1882.
"Roy graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1938 and married Jane Quardokus on June 29, 1946. He is survived by Jane; their son, James (Veronica) Elson; grandson, Philip Elson; grandchildren, Shannon and Michelle Gardner; sisters, Ruth Knecht of California and Ruby (George) Wintersteen of Mesa; and brother, Robert (Nancy) Elson of Golden, Colo.
"He was preceded in death by his parents.
"Roy spent four years in World War II in the Army Air Corps, mostly in the South Pacific, where he earned a bronze star, and was in training as a navigator on a B-17 when the war ended. After the war, Roy worked at 1900 Corp. for a time. Then Roy and Jane operated Elson's cabinet shop in Riverside until December 1960, when they left for the "Valley of the Sun" in a snow storm. That began a 44-year love affair with Arizona and an avoidance of snow for Roy. They successfully owned and operated Sun Valley Mobile Home Sales until retirement in 1985.
"His activities were many, including boating, fishing, and traveling with Jane in their diesel truck and fifth-wheel travel trailer. Probably his favorite hobby was helping his many friends and relatives on various building projects, both in Arizona and here in Michigan, where they visited every summer for a few weeks. He was an expert carpenter, electrician, plumber, roofer and designer, and he loved hard, physical labor. In retirement, he made a career of volunteer work at their community of Apache Wells in Mesa, where a building bears his name.
"He will be sadly but fondly missed by all who knew him."
