  • Notes
    • The 1880 federal census lists William's father as "Camble, Mathew," a 39 year old farmer born in Scotland to Scottish parents, living with his mother "Elisabeth," and brother George H, 7 months. Also in the household are two farm hands, James McMurtire, 24, from Scotland and Lewis Henson, 56, from Denmark. 1880 U.S. Census, Kendall, Kendall Cnty, IL (T 9, Roll 219, stamped p. 329)(the census indexer misread his father's surname so they are indexed as "Camhle"). See also: Elmer G. Dickson, 1880 Census of Kendall County, IL, p. 119 (published by E.G.Dickson, Chico, CA:1994).

      N. Bateman & P. Selby, HISTORICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ILLINOIS AND HISTORY OF KENDALL COUNTY, p. 960 (1914):
"William Campbell was born January 29, 1878, and is a farmer of Kendall County, and one of the representative men of his section. He received his educational training in the public schools and the Yorkville High School. He was married in Kendall County, January 1, 1901, to Miss Florence C. Croushorn.... To William Campbell and wife have been born the following children: Bernice [sic] born September 6, 1902; Elbert M., born February 25, 1904, died October 21, 1904; Anna E., born May 21, 1905; Helen I., born November 11, 1906; Russell C., born September 18, 1911, and Florence C., born May 19, 1913.*** "

The 1910 census lists William, his wife, and 4 children. It provides that William was the 32-yr old male head of household, born in Illinois, married for 9 years, working as a farmer and owning a general farm. His wife Florence is listed as 32-yrs old, born in Virginia, married 9 years, having born 5 children, 4 of whom were still living. The children listed were Bernice[sic], 7; Elizabeth, 4; Helen, 3; and Robert, 1. In addition to the family, the census records that the Campbells had an 18-yr old female "servant" and a 29-yr old "hiredman" living in the home. 1910 U.S.Census, Kendall twsp, Kendall Cnty, IL (T 624, Roll 295, stamped p. 234).

The 1920 census lists 41-yr old William as head of household, his wife Florence, 42, and 7 children: Berneice, Elizabeth, Helen, Robert, Russell, Corinne and Donald. Living with them was his sister-in-law Elizabeth Croushorn, 45. 1920 U.S.Census, Kendall twsp, Kendall Cnty, IL (T 625, Roll 380, stamped p. 42).

In an Email to Wm.C.Snouffer (25 Oct 2002), Elmer G. Dickson wrote: "In the 1922 Atlas of Kendall County, I found that the Campbell brothers owned property in section three and William and George Campbell each owned property in section eleven Kendall Township."

The 1930 census shows William, 52, living with his wife Florence, 52, and children Robert, 21, Russell, 18, Corinne, 15, and Donald, 14. Living next door was his brother George and wife Elizabeth. 1930 U.S. Census, Kendall Twsp, Kendall Cnty, IL (T 626, Roll 522, ED 9, p. 4B).

Kendall County Record [?] -- Obituary:
"WILLIAM CAMPBELL -- William Campbell, for many years a farmer southeast of Yorkville, more lately of Aurora, passed away at his home at 131 LeGrande boulevard, Aurora, Friday, December 12 [1947], at the age of 69 years. His passing was a shock to his numerous friends in Kendall county.
"Mr. Campbell complained of feeling ill and a physician was summoned, but death had taken Mr. Campbell by the time assistance arrived.
"William Campbell was born January 29, 1878 in Yorkville. He farmed for a number of years in Kendall county, retiring from farming several years ago. He was preceded in death by his wife eight years ago. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Elnathan [Elizabeth] Wheeler of Na-au-say, Mrs. Russell [Helen] Rink of Oswego, Mrs. Corinne Snouffer of Urbana and Mrs. Paul [Berneice] Houdek of Kansas City, Missouri; three sons, Russell of Oswego, Donald of Aurora and Robert of Anamosa, Iowa. Also surviving to mourn their loss are twenty-two grandchildren; a sister, Miss Ellen Campbell of Aurora, and two brothers, George of Aurora and Matthew of Sugar Grove.
"Mr. Campbell was a member of the Na-au-say Presbyterian church and Kendall lodge No. 471, A.F.& A.M., of Yorkville.
"Funeral services were conducted at the Healy chapel in Aurora Monday afternoon, December 15. The services were attended by a large number of Mr. Campbell's multitude of friends who will miss his cheerful outlook and genial personality."

Kendall County Record [?] -- Editorial:
"This community was sadly shocked last week when it was learned that Will Campbell had passed suddenly at his home in Aurora. It was one of those things which we just couldn't believe.
"Guess everybody knew this grand gentleman. Our acquaintance goes back to the days when we were merely old enough to remember whether we liked or didn't like someone. And like everyone else, we liked him. Even after he moved to Aurora a few years ago, he was most often in Yorkville, where he was pleased to greet us all with a cheery word and kid us along.
"Certainly there is a gap in many a circle of friendship caused by the passing of Will Campbell."
