The 1910 Michigan census lists Arthur, 10 yrs old, born [1900] in Ohio, living with his widowed mother and 7 siblings. 1910 U.S. Census, 4th Ward, Boyne, Charlevoix Cnty, MI (T 624, Roll 640, stamped p. 316).
Arthur served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He enlisted 17 Jul 1917 and rose to the rank of Private, first class on 25 Sep 1918. He saw service in France with the American Expeditionary Forces between 24 Dec 1917 and 3 Aug 1919. He was honorably discharged 14 Aug 1919. In 1920 the census reveals that his mother Mary had remarried. Her second husband was Beverly Gillstrap. Living with them were 4 of her children: Walter, 29, born in Ohio, employed as a "Prop[rieter], Pool Room"; Arthur, 19, b. in Michigan, an "electric welder Ry Shop"; Ruby, 14, b. in Michigan; and Claudia, 10, b. in Ohio. 1920 U.S. Census, Ward 7, Columbus, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 625, Roll 31109, stamped p. 176).
The 1930 census lists Arthur, 30, born in Ohio, living with his wife of 2 years, Leah, 20, born in West Virginia, and son Robert W, 1 & 8/12, born in Ohio. Living next door to them were his brother Walter, 40, born in Ohio, and his daughter Violet, 17, born in Michigan.
