  • Notes
    • John is listed in the 1860 Maryland census as a 5-yr old boy, born in Maryland, living with his parents and siblings in the home of farmer John Gingrich and his wife Susan. 1860 U.S. Census, 4th Dist., Reisterstown P.O, Baltimore Cnty, MD (M 653, Roll 468, stamped p. 216).

"John T." is listed in the 1870 Iowa census as a 14-yr old boy, born in Maryland, living at home in Cedar Rapids with his parents; as an occupation he "wks paper mill." 1870 U.S. Census, 4th Ward, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (M 593, Roll 405, stamped p. 53).

THE HISTORY OF LINN COUNTY, p. 679 (Western Historical Co., Chicago; 1878) states that "Snouffer, J. T." was a "salesman." The 1877-1878 Cedar Rapids City Directory lists "John T. Snouffer" as boarding at 219 S. Washington [with his brother] and gives his occupation as a salesman.

The 1880 census lists "John T" as living at home with his parents and siblings; it reports that he is 25 years old and "works in [a] dry goods store." 1880 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 351, stamped p. 98) [LDS Film 1254351].

The 1900 Iowa census (in very faint writing) lists "Snouffer, J.T.," 45 years old, born in Maryland in May, 1855, and married 19 years to his wife "R.M," 40 yrs old. John's occupation is obscured by a compiler who wrote "74G-001" over the occupation category, but the writing seems to be "Dealer D. Goods," so one may assume that John was a dry goods merchant of some sort. 1900 U.S. Census, What Cheer Prct, Washington Twsp, Keokuk Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 441, stamped p. 240B).

Cedar Rapids Gazette (?) (Jun 1907):
"One of the simplest of the long list of June weddings was that of Miss Bertha Ina Newens and Mr. William D. Snouffer, which took place Wednesday evening [19 Jun 1907] at the new home of the bride and groom, at 317 South Seventh street, west....
"*** Among the out-of-town guests at the wedding were ... the groom's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Snouffer of What Cheer...."

The 1910 Iowa census states that John T. is a 54-yr old man living with his wife of 28 years. It further states that both he and his father were born in Maryland, and that his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Although the census states the nature of his work and occupation, it is nearly illegible; it may state that he was either a "printer" or a "repairer." 1910 U.S.Census, Washington twsp, Keokuk Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 409, stamped p. 206).

The couple had one child, who died in infancy
