  • Notes
    • According to M.J. Fisher & R.P. Arter, The Arter/Arthur Family of Fountain Valley [MD], p. 13 (1979), and M. Jane (Free) Fisher & Richard P. Arter, The Arter-Arthur Family of Fountain Valley [MD](2d ed 1989)(published to CD-ROM by Richard P. Arter; 2003), ch. 00, p. 29 : "Daniel served in the Rev. War as an 'Associate' of Frederick County, Md, under the name Daniel Erder."

The "Journal of the Committee of Observation of the Middle District of Frederick County, Maryland, September 12, 1775--October 24, 1776," vol. 11, Maryland Historical Magazine, pp. 157-175 (1916), contains a "List of Associators" that includes Daniel Arter. (See also ibid, p. 163, where the name is spelled Arter, not Erder.) According to comments in the Magazine, the Committee was charged with supervising prisoners of war.

T.J.C. Williams & F. McKinsey, HISTORY OF FREDERICK COUNTY, p. 626 (1910), wrote that Daniel was listed in the first U.S. Census of 1790. And, in fact, the 1790 census does record "Daniel Arter" and a total of 11 persons living in his household -- 1 male over 16; 5 males under 16; and 5 females. Daniel's brother Michael is listed 4 lines below him. 1790 U.S. Census, Frederick Cnty, MD (M 637, Roll 3, written p. 173).

In the will of his father-in-law, Valentine Rinehart, Daniel's name is noted in a bequest to "my daughter Barbary Erter married with Daniel Erter...." Frederick County [MD] Will Book, GM 2: 437-438 (20 June 1791).

In the 1800 census Daniel Arter's family consisted of 9 members: males (ages 10-15) 1; (16-25) 1; (26-44) 1; (> 45) 1; females (> 10) 1, (10-15) 2, (16-25) 1, and (26-44) 1. 1800 U.S. Census, Westminster Twsp, Frederick Cnty, MD (M 32, Roll 10, stamped p. 193). Also listed on the same page of the 1800 census, Ibid, 7 households away, is the family of "John Snowfer" -- the father of Jacob Snouffer, who would become Daniel's son-in-law in about 1808 when Daniel's daughter Elizabeth married Jacob Snouffer.

Daniel Arter's Will was made 25 Sept 1812, and was probated 1 Feb 1813, so he probably died in early 1813. In the will he mentions sons Peter, Michael and Daniel, and daughters Mary Ann Shoemaker, Catharine Miller, and Elizabeth Snouffer. See Frederick County [MD] Will Book, RB 1: 359-361; M. Jane (Free) Fisher & Richard P. Arter, The Arter-Arthur Family of Fountain Valley [MD] (2d ed 1989)(published to CD-ROM by Richard P. Arter; 2003), ch. 00, p. 29.

The DAR PATRIOT INDEX, CENTENNIAL EDITION, Part 1, p. 83 (1990), provides: "Arter: Erter. Daniel: b 1742 MD d 1813 MD m Barbara Rinehart PS [Patriotic Service] MD." He is listed as "Ancestor # A003351" in the DAR Genealogical Research System at http://services.dar.org/public/dar_research/search_adb/default.cfm

Based on that classification, at least two persons have been granted membership in the DAR: Mrs. Mabelle Petree Horn of Forsyth, MO (Nat'l # 528923) [in 1967] and Mrs. Jean Petree Slaughter (a niece of Mrs. Horn) of Oak Park, IL (Nat'l # 617541) [in 1977].
    • (Research):
      Problems regarding Oerther/Erter/Arter/Arthur ancestors remain.

The DAR says that son Daniel was born 1742 in Maryland, but gives no sources. No Daniel is listed in the various ship lists, so maybe he was born in this country after-all. In which case, who were his parents and when did they immigrate?

His parents probably were Paulus Arter/Oerther and Anna Hausheer. See their notes in this database.

But there are other candidates: (1) "Friederich Erter" who sailed on the Snow Enterprise, and took his oath on 6 Dec 1738, see I.D.Rupp, THIRTY THOUSAND NAMES OF IMMIGRANTS IN PENNSYLVANIA, List 66, p. 130 (2d ed 1927); and (2) "Joh. Caspar Oether" who sailed on the Robert and Alice, and took his oath on 3 Dec 1740 (see Rupp, ibid, List 79, p. 143). Accord, R. Strassburger & W.Hinke, vol. 1, PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN PIONEERS (1934), List 66A, p. 248 ("Frederick Erter"); and List 79B, p. 288 ("Johan Casper Eader").

There is a "Mich'l Erter [age] 29" listed in Strassburger & Hinke, Ibid, p. 596, List 216A, who arrived on the ship Barclay on 14 Sept 1754, and who took the various oaths, Lists 216B and 216C, where his name is spelled "Michael Oerther." No Daniel is listed.

A Daniel Arter is listed in the 1790 U.S.Census for Maryland. He is shown living in Frederick County as the head of a family consisting of 1 "free white males" over 16 yrs of age, 5 males under 16 yrs, and 5 females. See HEADS OF FAMILIES AT THE FIRST CENSUS OF THE UNITED STATES TAKEN IN THE YEAR 1790 - MARYLAND, p. 60 (Genealogical Pub. Co. 1977). Who were the extra males?

The 1800 census lists a "Daniel Arter" family consisting of 4 males and 6 females, which probably is this family. Although the age brackets do not seem to match precisely, the total number of people matchs and the age distribution is comparable. 1800 U.S. Census, Westminster, Frederick Cnty, MD (M 32, Roll 10, stamped p. 193).
