  • Notes
    • The 1850 census stated that William was 19 yrs old and living with his parents Jacob, 66, and Elizabeth, 61. Also in the household were his siblings, Joseph, 33, and Mary, 22. It further reported that William, like his brother Joseph, was a carpenter. 1850 U.S. Census, Emmitsburg, Frederick Cnty, MD (M 432, Roll 292, stamped p. 167); M.F. Hitselberger & J.P. Dern, BRIDGE IN TIME, THE COMPLETE 1850 CENSUS OF FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND, p. 167 (Monocacy Book Co., Redwood City, CA: 1978).

The 1860 census shows "William Snoffer" [sic] as a 30-yr old laborer, living with his wife Julia and 4 children, in the home of farmer Samuel Gingrich and his wife Susan. 1860 U.S. Census, Reisterstown P.O, Baltimore Cnty, MD (4th Dist. p. 75)(M 653, Roll 468, stamped p. 216). [The census states erroneously that William was born in "Penn."]

In December, 1864, the family moved to Iowa. The wife of his grandson wrote that "The William I. Snouffer family came to C.R. [Cedar Rapids, IA] because his brother J.J. Snouffer was a successful business man and could give him work -- The "Mill" was a flour mill -- [it was established] here before Quaker Oats; perhaps that was the beginning of Quaker Oats." (Letter from Bertha Ina (Newens) Snouffer to her son Robert N. Snouffer; undated, but written in the early in 1970s.)

Years later, a Cedar Rapids Newspaper article [possibly the Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette], p. 5, col. 1 (3 Jan 1903), explained:
      "GOLDEN WEDDING
"A surprise party of unusual character was one of the events of New Year's day. The children of Mr. and Mrs. William I. Snouffer united to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their parents wedding day and also to suprise them....
"Mr. and Mrs. Snouffer are among the early residents of Cedar Rapids, coming here in December, 1864, from Maryland. They were born in the same year, 1831, Mr. Snouffer at Emmetsburg [sic], Feb. 6, and Mrs. Snouffer at Hanover, Penn., Feb. 4. They were married near Baltimore City, Jan. 2, 1853. The years before their removal to the west were filled with the excitement of war times and their home was on the main turnpike leading to the battlefield at Gettysburg. Mr. Snouffer was a loyal unionist but was physically disqualified to enter the army. As early settlers, almost pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. Snouffer are well known throughout Linn county. Mr. Snouffer's first employment in Cedar Rapids was a manager of N.B. Brown's saw mill. Later he engaged in milling and last was in the cement business for twelve years. For the five years past he has been enjoying a peaceful and retired life.
"Of the ten children of Mr. and Mrs. Snouffer, six are now living and all were present to congratulate their parents upon their fiftieth anniversary. The sons are John T. Snouffer of What Cheer; S. S. Snouffer, J. J. Snouffer, Frank Snouffer of Cedar Rapids; and the daughters, Mrs. J. M. Baker and Miss Tillie Snouffer of this city."

The 1870 Cedar Rapids City Directory listed William Snouffer as a worker at Brown's Saw Mills. The 1880-1881 Directory listed him as a Teamster with a "fire steamer"; address, 219 S. Washington.

The 1870 census lists "Wm." as a 39-yr old laborer, born in "Md," living in Cedar Rapids with his wife "Julia A," and children. 1870 U.S. Census, 4th Ward, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (M 593, Roll 405, stamped p. 53).

The 1880 census recorded him as a 49-yr old "laborer," living with his wife "Julia A," and children John, Josephine, Joshua, Frank and Anna, along with nephew Samuel S. 1880 U.S.Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 351, stamped p. 98) [LDS Film 1254351].

In 1900 the census shows that William I. and Julia A. Snouffer lived just 5 houses away from their daughter Josephine, her husband James Baker, and granddaughter Maude. 1900 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 444, stamped p. 91).

The 1910 census reports William I. Snouffer living with his wife Julia A., both born in Feb. 1831 and both 69 years old, and daughter "Matilda" born Mar 1868, 32 years old and single. 1910 U.S. Census, 3d Ward, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 444, stamped p. 91A)[Although the census reads "Snouffer," an indexer classified the name as "Snauffer"].

A newspaper obituary reads as follows:
"William I. Snouffer, 438 Fourth avenue west, a pioneer resident of Cedar Rapids, passed away at this home at 3 o'clock this morning at the advanced age of 81 years, the cause of death being paralysis of the heart. Mr. Snouffer came to Cedar Rapids from Maryland, December 17, 1864, and had been a resident of the city ever since. Besides his wife he is survived by five children: John T. Snouffer of What Cheer, Iowa; S.S., J.J. and Frank Snouffer, and Miss Tillie Snouffer, all of this city...."
