    • Obituary, Cedar Rapids Gazette (5 Feb 1975):
"Rudolph E. Shank, 87, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday in Mill Valley, Calif., following a long illness.
"Born April 19, 1887, at Cedar Rapids, he was married to Hannah Celestia Newens, July 31, 1913. He was a member of First Lutheran church and was employed for many years as a railway mail clerk for the North Western railroad while living in Cedar Rapids.
"Mr. Shank is survived by a daughter, Nadine McMaster of San Rafael, Calif.
"Burial: Tamalpais cemetery in San Rafael."
    • Carol Snouffer Jewell reported that "Uncle Rudy and Grandma Kent [Rudy's sister-in-law Bertha Newens Snouffer] taught both my sister Phyllis and me to play all forms of Canasta when Canasta was the "game of the day." He was a whiz at cards. His decks had braille identification and he had developed a holder for them. He could shuffle the cards and deal them as well as any sighted person. He mowed the lawn, dressed himself with no color coordination problems because they had developed a system of puttng his clothes away. He helped Lessie around the home. I do not know for sure the reason he was blind but had been told at one time that during the Depression he tried to take his own life but only ended up blinded. I do not know what his profession was when he worked but he had a wonderful sense of humor and certainly appeared to love Lessie very much and doted on his daughter Nadine."
