    • THE HISTORY OF LINN COUNTY, p. 790 (Western Historical Co., Chicago: 1878), states:
      "BAKER, JOSEPH W., farmer and stock raiser, S[ec]. 2 [of College Township]; P. O. Cedar Rapids; born in Dayton, Ohio, Feb. 15, 1834; moved to Linn Co., Iowa, 1851. Married Mary Jane Davey, March 2, 1854; she was born in Wayne Co., Penn., 1835; they had nine children, seven are living -- James Milton, born in College [Twsp], Iowa, Nov. 16, 1854; Eugene Jerome, born in Buchanan Co., Mo., Oct. 5, 1859; John Wellington, born in College, Iowa, July 14, 1862; George Davey, born in College, Iowa, April 16, 1864; William Augustus, born in College, Iowa, July 20, 1866; Sarah Albina, born in College, Iowa, February 17, 1868; Ransom Esdras, born in College, Iowa, June 11, 1875; Harriet Ellen, born April 2, 1856, and William Alford, born in 1858, died in infancy. Mr. Baker moved to Missouri Sept. 28, 1857, and returned to Linn Co., Iowa, Aug. 5, 1861. Mr. Baker was an early pioneer in Linn county. He has held the office of Supervisor."

      The 1860 census shows that Joseph, a 26-yr old sawyer, had moved to Missouri, where he was living with his wife Mary J, 25, and two sons, James M, 4, and Eugene J, 9 months old. (Neither Harriet Ellen nor William Alford is listed.) 1860 U.S. Census, DeKalb P.O., Bloomington, Buchanan Cnty, MO (M 653, Roll 609, written page 63).

      The 1880 census lists "Jos. W. Baker," 46, a farmer, living with his wife "Mary J," 44; and children "John W," 18; "Geo. D," 16; "Wm. A," 13; "Sarah A," 12; and "Esdras," 4. Also boarding with the family was Mary Card, a 21-yr old school teacher. 1880 U.S. Census, College Twsp, Linn Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 351, stamped p. 162B).

      The 1885 Iowa State Census shows Joseph Baker, 50, born in Ohio, living with his wife Mary J, 49, born in Pennsylvania, and 3 children, all born in Linn Cnty, IA: William A, 18; "Sallie A," 16; and Esdras, 9. 1856 Iowa State Census, Putnam Twsp, Linn Cnty, IA (Roll 219, stamped p. 201), original data from State Historical Society of Iowa, E. 12th & Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA 50319 (accessed via www.Ancestry.com, May 2008).

      Joseph was the subject of a sketch in PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF LINN COUNTY, IOWA, pp. 902-903 (Chapman Bros., Chicago: 1887):
      "Joseph W. Baker, a prominent farmer and dairyman, owns and occupies 300 acres of good land, on section 2, College Township....
      "Mr. Baker was born in Dayton, Ohio, Feb. 15, 1834. His father, Caleb Baker, a native of Virginia, was a tradesman, and also carried on farming in his native State.... [His] second wife, and the mother of our subject, was Miss Lucinda Cooper, who was married to Caleb Baker in Virginia, and coming West to Missouri with her husband, died in Holt County, in September, 1878 [sic], at the age of seventy-seven years, having survived her husband twenty-five years. The latter departed this life in College Township, Linn County, in August, 1853....
      "Joseph W. Baker first crossed the Mississippi in 1851, with his parents.... Three years later, on the 2d of March, 1854, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Davey, at the home of the bride's parents in College Township. Mrs. Baker was the daughter of William and Mary J. (Mitchell) Davey, natives of England, who ... settled in Wayne County, Pa., where their daughter, Mrs. B., was subsequently born March 4, 1835....
      "Mrs. Baker ... became the mother of nine children... : William A. and Harriet E. are deceased; James M. married Miss Josephine Snouffer, and they are living in Cedar Rapids; ... E. Jerome married Miss Martha Yerger, and is engaged in the grocery trade in Cedar Rapids; John W. is at home; George D. is engaged with the Cedar Rapids Oil Company; William A. married Miss Ada Minor and lives in College Township; Sarah E. and R. Esdras are at home...."

      Janet Olson Swart, The Family History of Samuel Baker, son of Gunsmith Caleb Baker Sr., ch. XII, pp. 313-340 (published to CD by Janet Olson Swart, 214 First Ave, Two Harbors, MN 55616: 2010), discusses the Joseph W. Baker - Mary Jane Davey family in detail. And, at p. 472, Ibid, she summarizes the family thus :
      "JOSEPH WESLEY BAKER ... was born 15 February 1834 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio and died 19 October 1909 in Cedar Rapids, College Township, Linn County, Iowa. He married MARY JANE DAVEY 02 March 1854 in College Twp., Linn County, Iowa. She was born 04 March 1835 in Honesdale, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, and died 07 November 1926 in Cedar Rapids, College Township, Linn County, Iowa.
