    • The 1870 census records that her mother Angeline Ellis, 35, was living with her children: "Doratha," 16; Ira [indexed as Iva], 13; "Thana," 11; and "Justena," 8. There is no mention of her father John. 1870 U.S. Census, Spring Grove Twsp, Linn Cnty, IA (M 593, Roll 405, stamped p. 369 B).
    • The 1900 census records Walter S. Bersley, 39, born Aug 1860 in IL, living with his wife of 19 years, Jestena, 38, born Jul 1861, in IA. 1900 U.S. Census, Spring Grove Tswp, Linn Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 444, stamped p. 312.
    • In 1910 the census shows Walter Bersley, 49, a farmer, living with his wife Jestena, 48, and their son Homer, 9, born in Iowa. 1910 U.S. Census, Spring Grove Twsp, Linn Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 410, stamped p. 252).
    • Luther A. Brewer and Barthinius L. Wick, History of Linn County Iowa, vol. 2, pp. 375-376 (Chicago; Pioneer Publishing Co: 1911), wrote:
      "Of the substantial men of Linn County, none ranks higher in agricultural circles than Walter S. Bersley, ***
      "The marriage of Mr. Bersley to Miss Jestena Ellis occurred on the 18th day of October, 1880. Mrs. Bersley is a daughter of John and Angeline Ellis, natives of Ohio, who came to Linn County in 1856 and always followed farming. By this marriage there is one son, Homer S., who is now nine years of age.
      "Mr. Bersley ... confines his efforts toward accomplishing results in conduct if his farm. His wife has long held membership in the Methodist Episcopal church and both enjoy confidence and esteem with all whom they have come in contact."
