- In 1910 the census lists his father Charles E Nelson, 29, and wife of 5 years, Stella, 28, living with their son Francis E, 4, and widowed mother-in-law Sarah Hoffman, 61. 1910 U.S. Census, Boone City, Des Moines Twsp, Boone Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 392, stamped p. 99).
The 1920 census records his father Charles, 38, living with his wife Stella, 38, son Francis E, 13, and widowed mother-in-law Sara A [sic] Hoffman, 71. 1920 U.S. Census, Boone, Boone Cnty, IA (T 625, Roll 479, stamped p. 92).
The Coe College Cosmos [Cedar Rapids, IA], p. 1 (16 Feb 1928), reported:
"The Military Ball, the largest of the all-college dances of the social year, will be held tomorrow evening.... The dance is sponsored by the Coe unit of Scabbard and Blade, military fraternity....
"The grand march led by the company commanders and the coed sponsors will follow the fifth dance. Lieut-Col Albert Patience ... will lead the march followed by ... Capt. Francis Nelson and Blanche Snouffer, of Company C...."
The 1930 census shows that Francis had moved from Iowa to New York City. He was 24 yrs old, a "lodger" at the Iroquois Hotel, and was employed as a "silver" salesman. 1930 U.S. Census, Manhattan, New York City, NY (T 626, Roll 1559, stamped p. 129B).
Obituary, The Gazette [Cedar Rapids, IA], p. 2 (16 Dec 1992):
"Francis E. Nelson, 86, of Rahway, N.J., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday [14 Dec] in a Rahway hospital.... Burial: Hazelwood Cemetery, Clark, N.J.
"Survivors include his wife, Blanche Snouffer Nelson; two daughters, Dr. Barbara N. Pavan of Valley Forge, Pa., and Judith N. McCracken of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
"He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra S. Anthony.
"Born in Boone [IA], Francis moved to Rahway in 1934. He was a graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids and did graduate work at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He was employed by the Gorham Co., New York City; Bamberger's Department Store, Newark; and later, R.H. Macy, New York City, for 26 years before retiring as senior executive in 1963.
"Mr. Nelson was a 58-year member of Second Presbyterian Church, Rahway, where he served as a trustee, elder and teacher of the Upper Room Bible class. He was a director of the Full Gospel Businessman's Fellowship International and a founder and president of World Harvest Evangelism Inc., for which he led crusades in India for 30 years.
"Mr. Nelson served on the board of governors of the Rahway Hospital and board of directors of the Rahway YMCA. He was treasurer of Rahway Republican City Committee and a member of the tennis team at the Ilderan Outing Club, Rahway."
