    • The 1870 Iowa census lists "Joshua J" as an 8-yr old boy, born in Maryland, living at home with his parents and siblings. 1870 U.S. Census, 4th Ward, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (M 593, Roll 405, stamped p. 53).

      The 1880 census lists "Joshua B." [sic] as living at home with his parents and siblings; it reports that he is 19 years old and "working in grocery". 1880 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 351, stamped p. 98) [LDS Film 1254351].

      According to a program published by the First English Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, IA, when it was dedicated on Sunday, 10 Sep 1882, the officers of the church's Sunday School included "J. J. Snouffer, Secretary" and "Miss Annie Ausieker [sic], Asst. Secretary."

      The 1900 census shows "Snauffer, Jas. J," 39, born in Dec 1860 in Maryland, employed as a "Gro. salesman," living with his wife of 17 years, Anna E, 39, b. May 1861 in Iowa, and their 5 Iowa-born children: William D, 16, b. Apr 1884, and employed in "hardware sales"; Edward M, 14, b. May 1886; Arthur J, 12, b. Dec 1887; Bessie E, 8, b. Dec 1891; and Charles, 1 month, b. Apr 1900. A servant also lived with them. Living only eight houses away was Anna's mother Charlotte and a number of her siblings. 1900 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 444, stamped pp. 302B-303A).

      The 1910 census lists Joshua as the 49-yr old head of a family consisting of his wife of 28 years, Anna E, and children Edward M., Bessie E., and Charles W. It records that he, as well as his parents, were born in Maryland. It states that his occupation was as a "merchant." 1910 U.S. Census, 9th Prct, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 411, stamped p. 155).

      The 1920 census reports that "Josiah" J. Snouffer is 59-yrs old, living with his wife Anna, "61," and son Charles W., 19. Charles' occupation is as a price clerk for an electrical supply house. 1920 U.S. Census, 17th Precinct, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 625, Roll 500, stamped pp. 190-191).

      The Cedar Rapids [IA] Republican, p. 11 (13 Dec 1925), reported that Joshua J. Snouffer was elected clerk at the annual election of Linden Camp No. 145, Modern Woodmen of America.

      The 1930 census lists Joshua J Snouffer, "69," an insurance clerk, and his wife Anna E, "68," living next door to his brother Samuel S. Snouffer and family. 1930 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, 19th Prct, Linn Cnty, IA (T 626, Roll 665, ED 64, p. 6B).

      Cedar Rapids [IA] Gazette ( May 1933):
      "A reception this evening at the First Lutheran church will observe the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Joshua J. Snouffer, 115 Seventh street SW, which they share celebrating today.
      "Mr. and Mrs. Snouffer were married on May 3, 1883, at the home of Mrs. Snouffer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aussicker [sic], at 113 First street SE, where the new post office now stands....
      "The Snouffers cherish yellowed clippings from the three Cedar Rapids newspapers of that time, The Gazette, The Republican and The Times, each describing the event. Mr. and Mrs. Snouffer have been subscibers to The Gazette throughout the fifty years of their married life.
      "Both Mr. and Mrs. Snouffer are 72 years of age, and Mrs. Snouffer has always lived in Cedar Rapids, her father having been a pioneer business man here. Mr. Snouffer came here with his parents Dec. 17, 1864, at the age of four years, from Ricertown [sic], Md., where he was born and this has been his home since. He was in the grocery business for nearly thirty years and a part owner of the Rudolph Grocery company, and for about twenty years he has been clerk of the Modern Woodmen in Cedar Rapids, a position which he still holds.
      "Mr. and Mrs. Snouffer are one of the oldest couples in length of membership in the First Lutheran church. They have four sons, William D., Edward M., and A. J., all of Cedar Rapids, and Charles, of St. Paul, and one daughter, Mrs. Claude Elson, of Benton Harbor, Mich., as well as fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild."

      Cedar Rapids Gazette (1 May 1939):
      "Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Kent, 1511 D avenue NE, entertained at a family dinner party Sunday [30 Apr], honoring Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Snouffer, who will celebrate their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary Wednesday [3 May]. Mr. and Mrs. Snouffer, pioneer residents of Cedar Rapids, were married May 3, 1883, at the home of Mrs. Snouffer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aussicker [sic], 113 First street SE, where the post office now stands. Mrs. Snouffer is celebrating her seventy-eighth birthday Monday [1 May].
      "Guests at the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. Edward M. Snouffer and their daughter, Miss Anna Mae Snouffer, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Snouffer and their son, Norman, Mrs. R. E. Shank, Miss Nadine Shank, Robert Scharfenberg and Ed Davidson...."

      A 1940 newspaper story entitled "Four Generations of One Family in Local Church," reported that the 1 Sep 1940 baptism of William Campbell Snouffer "gave living representation in the [Cedar Rapids First Lutheran] church to four generations of Snouffers....
      "Great-grandfather Snouffer, 79, in point of continuous membership is the second oldest living member of the First Lutheran church...; he joined the church in 1877. His wife, 81, became a member in 1881. Between them they have amassed a total of more than 130 years' attendance at the church Sunday school."       Obituary, Cedar Rapids Gazette (-- Oct 1943):
      "Joshua J. Snouffer, 82, of 115 Seventh street SW, a pioneer resident of Cedar Rapids, died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 7:25 p.m. Sunday [17 Oct], following a brief illness. Born Dec. 31, 1860, in Maryland, he came to Cedar Rapids from there in 1864. He was married to Anna E. Aussieker May 3, 1883 in Cedar Rapids. Mr. Snouffer was with the S. L. Rudolph grocery for many years.
      "Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Edward M. and Arthur J. of Cedar Rapids and Charles W. of St. Paul, Minn.; a daughter, Mrs. Claude Elson of Benton Harbor, Mich.; a sister, A. Matilda Snouffer of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A son, William D. died in 1935.
      "Mr. Snouffer was a member of the First Lutheran church and was treasurer of the Sunday school for many years.
      "Services will be held ... Wednesday [20 Oct]...."
